Thinking Beyond The Map

As a writer, I try to think outside the box. Redefine what's been drive before and reframe the familiar. One of the most underrated ways to make a story original, in my opinion, is setting it in a unique location.

Locations are more then just the pin on the map where your characters live and work. They inform the tone of the story and atmosphere the players inhabit. An unexpected setting can be just as memorable as a unique character.

It isn't hard to find original locations. The book I've been working on lately is set mostly in New York City. But I have other ideas, too. 

Thunder Bay, Odesa, Gimmelwald, Belgrade, and Talinn are some of the locales where I plan to set my stories in the future. That's Canada, Ukraine, Switzerland, Serbia, and Estonia.

If you're like me and you love to travel, you know how different places feel different. Washington, D.C feels official. Houston feels laid-back. 

Let the setting help to dictate how your characters act. Think outside the box, and beyond points on a map.
